Public Servants; Not Royalty
Today the U.S. Senate takes up a piece of the Health Care take-over. The issue is whether or not to create a public option within that take-over. Volumes have been written on this subject, and anything I might opine would be redundant. The facts are what they are.
There's a issue that's just as important, if not more important than this shift towards socialism: it's the issue of Representative Government. As of this writing, pollster Scott Rasmussen finds that fifty-six percent (56%) of Americans don't want this health care take-over, while only forty-one percent (41%) are in favor. That leaves three percent not knowing what they do and don't want. This is a clear majority of Americans against the legislation as a whole.
This brings me to my point: "Legislators aren't elected, and sent to Washington, to make deals and enhance their futures on the backs of the voters who invest their trust in them. They are sent there to REPRESENT THE CITIZENS BACK HOME!"
The time has come for the elected to understand that they are public servants; not royalty.
When you have Legislators complaining that constituents want them to actually READ a bill before voting on it. When you have Representatives more concerned about their party's whip, or leadership, (or anything else beside representing the folks back home). When you have them avoiding their constituents because their loyalty is awarded to pols and check-writers instead those constituents: then it's time to bring them home. They've obviously been bastardized.
I'm reminded of Congressman Sam Farr of California. Who called his constituents unsympathetic to others, then refused to participate in the Pledge of Allegiance, of all things.
Or Congressman Pete Stark (D) also of California who told a constituent that he "wasn't worth the urine" to "p" (iss) on his leg". And this man has the temerity to comment on Joe Wilson's getility.
Another would be Cathy Castor of Tampa Florida. This representative determined that pro-legislation constituents should be allowed in her Town-hall meeting: then changed it to they should have the majority of seats in the meeting. On top of that, she incorporated union thugs into her meeting to intimidate those who disagreed with her capitulation to the party leaders. It was at this meeting that we have video of union thugs assaulting a black man and calling him the most despised word in the English language (I wonder why Democrat-lead Tampa hasn't arrested this thug, and why the union isn't under investigation. Actually, I don't; I'm confident of the answer). We had an American version of Crystal Night in Ybor City.
Next there's Brian Baird (D) of Washington State who says those who disagree with the health care take-over are like the Nazi Brown Shirts. This was a group who intimidated citizens during Germany's tumultuous post Great War era. I would recommend Baird watch the video of Cathy Castors' town-hall meeting. The union thugs, wearing t-shirts have replaced those brown uniforms of the 1930's. This is as close to "Brown-shirt activities" I can find. Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Bill Nelson, and Corrine Brown; all examples of those whom my grandfather would proclaim have "gotten too big for their britches". Party slugs all.
These people need to understand that Americans will not sit back and be ignored. November always comes around. This time we aren't going to watch their commercials, listen to their spin, accept their apologies, or vote them back into their elitists positions.
Either represent us, or find another job.

Idiocy in Paradise
There's a town in SE Vermont, that I think is the financial hub of that area. It's a town called Brattleboro Vermont. While the people in that town were absolutely wonderful, and the town looks like something from a Thomas Kinkaid painting; I found the local newspaper to be the antithesis. Let me explain. At this point in time, the nation is at odds with it's liberal leadership. As the paper the "Brattleboro Reformer" (weekend edition) reported the news, I have to admit that I've never seen so many contortions to down play bad news in the 43 years I've been reading newspapers. I now understand why the last Presidential election played out the way it did in such a charming part of the country. The shear ignorance, and unapologetic diatribe that came from this rag would have been comedy in action, were it not for the fact that this town BELIEVES this blathering!
No wonder this town's council voted to arrest George W. Bush or Dick Cheney if they stepped foot into this ski-resort town. This is the same town council that passed a law saying any citizen can walk through the town streets in their birthday suits! And without weight restrictions no less!
Now, I'm not one of those people who say newspapers are supposed to be unbiased. I'm a big fan of the first amendment. I do, however, think intellectual honesty requires a biased view to be presented acknowledging that bias. For example, I saw a cartoon characterizing Obama as George Washington (Obama owns slaves?) and Congressman Joe Wilson as "Congressman Jerkasaurus"- and anyone who supported him as more "jerkasauruses". That's fair enough. Wilson violated protocol by accusing Obama of telling a lie (which makes one wonder how they could ever portray him as Washington); but one must take into account that Obama, that very weekend agreed to remove from his requirements the issue he actually had lied about in that address, (establishing that the accusation was in fact; true). I guess that necessitates the Reformer to be characterized as apologist for King George: "Editor Spinalotuchus".

Now is the Time.
As a young family; my wife, my two daughters and I made our annual pilgrimage to Walt Disney World in Kissimmee. I mention this only because I think of the old Carousel of Progress theme song every time I contemplate the proposition that "Now is the Time". I remember the old parrot singing "Now is the time, now is the best time". As unorthodox as it may seem in a political environment, I'd like for you to consider that attraction, and that song, as we work together to create conservative Republican majorities in Washington D.C. and build a stronger coalition in Tallahassee.
At a recent District Charmian's' meeting I heard the proposition several times that "2009 is the year to think about the mid-term elections, and that 2010 was the year to galvanize". I respectfully disagree. I'm of the opinion that this is the yer to galvanize if we are to take back our congress, preserve our freedoms, and rescue our nation!
Conservative Americans lost the last Presidential election by a mere 6% of the vote. Hardly a landslide victory for Democrats. That fact is now illustrated by the excessively poor approval ratings of the Democrats in all levels of government. Many of that 6% have repudiated their vote and turned to the Republican Party with hat in hand, and are literally begging us to fix the mess they helped create.
We understand the dynamics of the last election, we understand why these independents and conservative Democrats voted as they did. There is no animosity, there is no venom in our collective hearts: we understand. As the father of the Prodigal Son of old, we run to them, pull them to our bosoms, and cry "welcome home child, welcome home!"
I. As evidence that this is the paradigm in America today, let me ask you to consider:
a. The polls are in our favor
i. 2/3 of Independents now favor the Republican Party.
ii. 1/4 of Democrats now favor our party.
iii. A clear majority of Americans now believe that the President and Democrat Congress have no idea what they're doing.
iv. An even bigger percentage of Americans believe they understand fiscal principles better than their Democrat representatives.
v. Republicans now out-poll Democrats in 9 of the top 10 most important issues in America today. What is the 1? The issue of trust.
It is reasonable to conclude that Americans realize that Republicans, at least verbally; represent their perspectives and opinions. They are once again willing to take a chance on us. Not because we are so alluring, but because they really have no place else to go.
b. Consider the fact that the Republicans are receiving the credit for the Tea Parties. Even though we all understand that the tea party movement represents every dynamic in America today- save the the liberal social element. So many people who admit their Democrat Party has failed them; and are crediting the GOP with those parties' successes.
Americans, one and all: focused on a desire for a smaller government. Patriots who are extremely irritated by the arrogance of those whom they voted to represent them. Those who are, hopefully; developing a politically-fatal case of "Potomac Fever".
c. Conservative Polling result from every state. Including: Massachusetts, California, and even Hawaii.
Americans are now experiencing the difference between conservative policies and liberal policies; and they have the sense to know it!
Also Consider:
d. The Town Hall Meetings. The numerous participants who included in their stated concerns "and I'm a registered Democrat".
The fact that these people are now being targeted by their own party's' thugs: the assaulting of the elderly, the racial insults and attacks on life-long Democrats are horrific. Add to that the insults coming from their party's' leadership, (and the media, by the way!): all illustrate that their Party has fallen off of it's collective rocker,
These are the facts that conclude "Now is the Time".
II. The Time is Right
This is the time for Republicans to step into the picture and proclaim "yes! we understand, we know how to fix this. And yes again: we want to represent you- not the vitriolic America haters who have consumed your Democrat Party!
a. Timing is everything.
Some would say "great, the situation is rosy, the trends are pointing in our favor. We can assume great progress in 2010 and thereafter. I disagree.
When influencing people it is always better to do so when they are ready to sign on the dotted line. Salesmen know they have to convince prospects before they buy. Mentors, counselors, social workers and teachers all understand the principle of creating interest and buy-in to gain desired reaction from their students; and that timing is an important element when doing so.
This is the time: right now! While we have the attention of the American people. Americans are looking to us to save this nation from the vileness of mediocrity- and the mortality that neo-socialism will bring to this great nation. The time is right: right now because:
i. Passions are high
Conservatives, Moderates and Libertarians, all agree that this Congress and administration is slouching towards the goal of creating one giant nipple to coddle and subdue the masses; and can reasonably be classified as an "enemy domestic".
ii. Liberals aren't stupid- even if their policies are.
They understand that they must shift drastically rightward next year: they have a history of doing so. They understand that failing to do that will cause them great losses in the 2010 mid-term elections. They've even voted for, and passed a stimulus bill that will ostensibly become their campaign cash for next year.
We cannot make the same mistake we made after Bill Clinton was elected: we cannot assume liberals will self-destruct. While they can reasonably be classified as "anal cavities" they cannot be classified as "stupid". The time is right because:
iii. Republicans are being greeted as rock stars and saviors on the front steps of conservative Americans. REMEMBER: the polls tell us that CONSERVATISM is the paradigm of choice in America today.
Within weeks of Obama's inauguration, people began to long for an answer to the liberal lunacy: and they settled on putting their hope in the Republican Party.
b. Because we bring comfort to a distressed electorate.
Americans are heart sick, they're frightened, and yes they're mad as "you know where" and they don't want to take anymore. We can be the answer to their prayers- but we must act now. Before fear turns to apathy, and apathy turns to resignation!
In 1989 my grandmother became ill with cancer. She had my father, step mom, and friends around her constantly. But I still got a call saying she kept asking if I was coming down. So I took a few days off of work and drove down to Sumpter County. I found her to be alarmingly melancholy, and step mom said she layed in a dark room most of the day. I tapped on the door and asked "Nana, are you awake?" She opened her eyes, and asked "where you been boy?". I explained that I'd been making arrangements to come down. She said she understood, she sat up, hugged my neck, and asked what I was doing "up there in Jacksonville".
That night she came to the table and ate supper with us. Afterwords we sat on the back porch and said a whole lot of nothing: but it was all very important to her.
This is the same reception Republicans are receiving as they knock on conservative doors in this city. This is a work of compassion towards fellow Americans. This is the work that will make a difference IF we visit them this year, an "off-year", when no one wants anything. But we must do this work now: before fear turns to apathy and apathy turns to resignation.
III. How do we accomplish this?
a. Visit Republicans now, this year, this week, tomorrow after work.
Next year will change the dynamic of the visit. It'll be an election year and politicians always want something. This is the year to build the friendships, the relationships- when one American is relating to another. You're just a neighbor visiting another.
b. Look for opportunities to represent the GOP
i. Make casual comments about the headlines while standing in line.
ii. Wear casual clothing delineating you as a proud Republican.
iii. Wear you volunteer lanyard when visiting garage sales and flea markets. Posture as if you've been about your party business and you happened to stop by. People will engage you in conversation!
iv. Always accent the party's positives. Address the negatives if you must, but always return to the positives.
Finally:
v. Develop a sense of urgency. It the biggest difference between what we can do, and what the liberals are doing. Remember the parrot: "Now is the time, now is the best time. . ."
Mr Chairman:
My facts are accurate, my assertions are reasonable; and they conclude that NOW is the best time to be about our nations business. Now is the time.

Beautiful New England
I had the opportunity to spend a long weekend up in New England this week. New Hampshire to be specific. A dear friend of mine turned 50 and I was the big surprise, (no, I didn't wear a skimpy oufit and pop out of a cake!). It's been 28 years since I last visited, and I found that part of the country to be more beautiful than I remembered. While I missed the fall colors by "a couple of weeks" I still found the scenery to be spectacular. Such a place one can truly see the Majesty of the Creator at work. The firmament certainly does proclaim His handiwork!
While New England hosts some of the most beautiful topography I've ever seen, it's the people that make her unique. None of that big city brashness from these fine people: no sir! The night before the party, I spent the night with the family of my friends sister. I watched as sister and mother "slaved" in the kitchen so early in the morning so my friend would have a memorable birthday. The family was charming, accommodating (mom gave up her room so I could have some privacy) and as down to earth as the mountains you can see from their front room window. My friends mother is, -well you don't talk about age when referring to women, but he was celebrating his 50th birthday, you can do the math- and so full of life. This grand matriarch of the family even got herself a tattoo! I chided her that she'll be on a Harley one day, and she said she thought that to be a great idea! This family is blessed with beautiful children, kind people, and so very gracious: I was honored to be their guest.
"that's not a Vermont accent!"
My friend was wanted to show me a place he'd not visited since his boyhood (remember, he's 50 now) we stopped to ask a passer-by for directions. With my southern drawl, I said "excuse me ma'am" to which she immediately replied "that's not a Vermont accent!" She knew exactly where we were, and where we needed to be; and even escorted us to the bottom of the hill (looked like a mountain to me!) and made sure we found the sight. This type of graciousness was expressed everywhere I visited.
I must say, if you want to have some fun, go to New England with a southern drawl and watch the people react to it. Once they do, use the line "you know, I'm not from around here" and watch the second reaction! I've already mentioned the impromptu tour-guide, but here are a couple more: We stopped to eat dinner at a Burger place. While filling my own drink (sweet iced tea, of course) I made a comment to a lady who was doing the same. As I walked away, she looked at my friends wife and asked if we were up for the stock car races! That's right, anytime you have a southern accent in New England, you MUST be there because of the stock car races!
In another place (also a burger place-ok so I ate too much red meat) I did what any gentleman would do: I held the door open for a lady as she entered. When she thanked me I replied "you're quite welcome" at which time she almost bumped into another gentleman because her head was turned as far backwards as it would go: as she continued to walk forward. Now I have to admit that I added the "quite" to the return greeting because I've learned to have some fun with this verbal anomaly I possess. You have to find your fun where and when you can!
so many wonderful people. . .
Happy birthday to Dave. A big BIG thank you to: Helen, Joanne, Cathy, Jonathan, Rachel, my new friend Jillian, and so many more. . .

A big BIG thank you to: Helen, Joanne, Cathy, Jonathan, Rachel, my new friend Jillian, and so many more. . .

A Response to a Gannett Article calling for more Civility
While I agree that civility is an important attribute of society, and is a commodity missing in American politics today. I think the old media writer here is experiencing something different than rudeness. I think this writer is longing for the days when liberals were "young, bright, enthusiastic,” and therefore their brashness must be accepted as zeal.
You see, this lack of civility didn't begin with town hall meetings or modern Tea Party’s'. It began when Democrats attempted to ruin one Judge Robert Bork in 1987. It was at this place in modern history that the gloves came off and gentility was sacrificed on the altar of political victory. Brashness spread its ugly head to Judge Thomas, Bush 41, Dan Quayle, and Bush 43. It came with many different blooms on its vine: a modern day lynching, “Bush=Hitler”, “Boo-ing” Bush 43 during a speech to Congress, General “Betrayus”, insults to the American military for the sake of political expediency, and insulting one former POW for not using a keyboard as backwards and out of touch because his hands were damaged while in service to his country.
There are also those who hide behind their religion to incorporate their rudeness. The REVERENDS Jessie Jackson drawing the race card like a gun, Jeremiah Write and his decades-old rantings against America and those evil white folks, Michael Pfledger defending racism, and untold thousands of black Pastors preaching hatred from their pulpits. You see? The lack of civility; or at least gentility has been absent from politics for decades.
This brashness has now mutated into insulting Americans who disagree with liberals. It has degenerated even further to assaulting the elderly, and calling black conservatives “niggers” while in the act of a felonious assault and battery. Think of this, the liberals are willing to throw away all they’ve espoused just to win one single political issue. It reeks of hatred, vileness, and hypocrisy. “Civility” is the least of Americas issues.
The real concern of the old media is that conservatives have begun to incorporate the liberals play book into theirs. They aren’t supposed to do that, (in the liberal’s opinion). While liberals are enthusiastic and brash, conservatives are supposed to be refined and stoic. Now that they have control of both houses, and the Executive Branch, the libs want to adopt an air of sophistication. Their “sensibilities” are now offended by the “aggressiveness” of those they mean to rule, instead of lead.
Joe Wilson may have breached decorum, but he wasn’t the first to breach that decorum. He’s just the first to have to answer for it. This is another attempt at a modern day lynching by liberals against a conservative. This time it isn’t going to happen. The Democrats have over-shot their position out of desperation. The Congressman enunciated what 52% of Americans already know- and the liberals are near apoplexy over it. The liberal sophistication is a ruse, the gentility is fake, and the only thing concerning to the liberal media is they no longer control the dialog of American politics.
Let me assert with all the gentility the old media deserves: “Screw you, buddy. Better get used to it.”‘nuff said. . .
